Overview
This article explains the concept of a proxy server, its key features, and how SecPod Saner CVEM operates when a proxy is enabled. It also provides step-by-step instructions for configuring a proxy within the Saner CVEM console as well as directly on the endpoint device.
How Does a Proxy Server Work?
A proxy server acts as an intermediary between a client device and the internet.
When you request to visit a website, the request first goes to the proxy.
The proxy forwards the request to the target website.
The website’s response is then returned to the proxy, which sends it back to your device.
Essentially, the proxy fetches resources on your behalf while adding a layer of security and control.
Key Features of Proxy Servers
1. Security
Proxies act as a safeguard by filtering and preventing harmful traffic from reaching your computer.
They may also encrypt traffic, ensuring that your browsing sessions and sensitive information remain secure.
2. Anonymity
Proxies can mask your IP address, making it more difficult for websites or external services to identify you.
This works like wearing a mask at a masquerade ball—you are present, but your real identity is hidden.
Configuring Proxy in Saner CVEM
Saner CVEM allows proxy settings to be configured both centrally via the console and locally on the endpoint device.
Method 1: Configure Proxy in the Saner CVEM Console
Log in to saner.secpod.com.
Click on the Control Panel at the top right corner.
In the left pane, select Agent Configuration.
Click on Create Settings.
Enter the required proxy details (e.g., Proxy IP address, port, credentials if applicable).
Click Create to save the configuration.
Once created, the proxy settings will be applied to all devices within the selected group. All subsequent communication between the devices and Saner CVEM will occur via the configured proxy IP.
Method 2: Configure Proxy Directly on the Endpoint Device
You can also manually configure proxy settings on an endpoint device:
Navigate to the following directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\SecPod Saner\Agent\6.5.x.x\conf
Locate and open the settings.ini file.
Add or update the proxy configuration details such as:
Proxy address
Port number
Username and password (if required)
Save the file after making changes.
Restart the Saner agent service to apply the new proxy settings.
Summary
By configuring proxy settings in Saner CVEM, either centrally through the console or locally on the endpoint, administrators can ensure:
Secure and controlled communication with Saner CVEM services.
Support for environments where direct internet access is restricted.
Seamless functionality even in networks that mandate the use of proxy servers.
