How to Connect a Device to Microsoft Patch Server When WSUS Server Fails

If the WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) server fails, you can configure your devices to connect directly to the Microsoft Patch Server. Follow the steps below to ensure seamless patching and updates.

Solution:

  1. Access Agent Configuration:
    1. Open the Control Panel on the device.
    2. Navigate to Agent Configuration.
  2. Select the Account:
    1. In the Agent Configuration interface, select the appropriate account.
  3. Create New Settings:
    1. Click the Create Settings button to define new patching configurations.

  1. Configure Remediation Settings:
    1. Go to the Remediate section.
    2. Under the Vendor Products Patch Server option, configure the following:
      • Vendor Products Patch Server: Select Default with Alternate/Secondary Microsoft Patch Server.
      • Secondary Patch Server:
        • URL: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
        • This server will be used when the default WSUS server patch search fails.

  1. Fill in Configuration Details:
    1. Provide the following information:
      • Settings Name: Enter a unique name for the settings.
      • Settings Description: Add a description to help identify the purpose of these settings.
      • Device Group: Select the group of devices that will use this configuration.
  2. Save the Settings:
    1. Click the Create button to save the new configuration.

Notes:

  • Ensure the network firewall and proxy settings allow access to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
  • Test the new configuration on a sample device to verify the connectivity and patching process before applying it to all devices.

This process will help maintain device compliance and ensure timely updates in scenarios where WSUS is unavailable.
